Matthew Thomas At the age of 14, he had already won several local art competitions and track championships while volunteering at the National Civil Rights Museum for two consecutive years. At 16, he was selected to participate in the Tennessee Governors School for the Arts and humanities where he decided to take a serious step toward a career in art. On November 28 1996, Matthew’s outlook on life completely changed after receiving a gunshot wound to the head. This evenat propelled his drive for creative success. Three days later, he began a series of untitled works that would later receive the American Visions Award, a Gold Award in Painting, and a Silver Award in Printmaking at the National Scholastics Arts and Writing Competition in 1998. He also received exhibition space at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and a two- second miss from national rank in the half mile run that same year. While attending undergrad at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Hallmark Cards recognized his artistic talent at the age of 19, where he began his freelance career as an illustrator. He began experimenting with various art forms from painting, drawing, and sculpture to web design, motion graphics, and video. By his senior year, he had directed two commercial spots: a promotional bumper for Sveriges Television and a PSA celebrating African—American achievements on the east coast. After receiving Bachelors in Illustration in 2002, he decided to further his education and received his Master’s in Digital Arts in 2003. His graduate thesis film “That Day” won the 2003 Gold Award in the Canon Digital Creators Contest Movie Division, screening at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, Best Screenplay at the 2003 Red Bull Independents Filmmaking Challenge, international distribution with Film Movement’s 2004 slate, as well as several other festival screenings and awards. He also won the Digital Excellence Award from Maryland Institute, College of Art after receiving his Master’s in Digital Arts in 2003. A second near-death experience in 2004 encouraged Matthew to move to New York City to pursue a career in the film industry. Currently, Matthew resides in Brooklyn, New York where he recently (Summer 2006) received office space provided through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council located in the financial district of downtown Manhattan for production of his latest short film The Kindness of Strangers.
